PHILOSOPHY
-
We believe first aid and drug support
services should be welcoming, comfortable and relaxed, with a decor
and image appropriate to the people we're serving.
-
We're there to
give unconditionally, without judgement, bias, or criticism.
-
Our services are promoted as being
totally confidential, so people who are afraid to seek help because
they've had illegal substances - won't be.
-
Our services are wholistic in the
true sense of the word - providing conventional and complementary
health care and information on a wide range of topics, as well as
social and welfare assistance, information and counselling.
-
Our services are dynamic, creative
and modern, based on the needs of today's events, today's drugs and
today's partying youth.
-
Our services are entirely
professional, ensuring that the highest levels of professional
staff, safety, risk assessment, supervision and protocol are met.
-
Our aim is to provide quick and
effective rehabilitation whenever possible, which means we much
prefer to allow someone back into the event once they're sorted out,
rather than evict them.
-
We provide drug affected people
with intensive one-on-one professional support in a calm
environment, for as long as it takes.
-
We liase pre-event and honour existing
protocols, communication procedures and chains of command so that
our services integrate seamlessly with the other services at an
event.
-
We educate
and encourage people to make good informed decisions about how they
choose to party, based on their best interests.

SUPPORT CREW ROLES
Our Support Crew monitor the
Chill Out Lounge,
unobtrusively looking for people who might need a hand - whether it's a blanket, a drink of
water, a pillow, a first-aider, or just someone to talk to. Nothing is pushed on anyone, it's just quietly offered.
Chill Out lounges are often
where people end up when they're not feeling the best but also not quite ready to
approach first aid.
Loveworks Support Crew can provide
one-on-one support, assistance and counselling, usually in the
Pink Room,
although we also use them in the Chill Lounge
and Chai Tent.
For instance, we might have someone who is unstable because of a psychiatric
problem or recreational drugs. Or injured and anxious while waiting for an
ambulance. They may have lost their friends or money. A member of Loveworks Support will sit with them for as long as it takes to calm them down
(or come down!). We always try to rehabilitate people rather than expel them
from the event. Support Crew can also comfort friends and family.
And they can hand out train fares, a change of clothes if needed, blankets and
pillows, cups of tea, drinks of water....
Be a Lovesaver.
These field teams, called
Lovesavers,
are made up of a nurse and a Drug and Alcohol Worker. They
patrol the event, looking for people who need help. These people may be
severely intoxicated, distressed or need first aid. Lovesavers also
carry event maps (as they're often asked for directions!), bum bag first aid
kits, spray-on sunscreen and sunburn relief, and they can hand out free
bandaids, antiseptic wipes, condoms and so on. We supply them with 2-way radios
which they can use to bring first aid or security to them as needed. They wear
special Lovesaver uniforms with flashing light vests at night.
We also love to have a nurse who's open-minded about natural
therapies in our
Natural Pharmacy,
especially for major or over-night events. And we love to have
a Social Welfare, or Community Worker in our
Information Stand.
We
also like to have handouts
and someone available to talk about local services: emergency housing, welfare,
drug and alcohol services, mental health, etc, as well as provide some
counselling and confort. Our Support Crew can also assist first aid in finding
emergency placement with local services (eg hospitals, mental health, refuges).
And they help us source and distribute up-to-date and street-wise info on drugs, safe sex,
abuse, and other youth issues. |
