LOVESAVERS
Patrolling First Aid, Drug and Alcohol
and Patron Support

Lovesavers are our search and rescue teams.  These teams of comprised of volunteer Nurses and volunteer Drug and Alcohol worker/counsellors.  Their qualifications and experience are far above conventional first aid services.

Lovesavers patrol the event, particularly the "hot spots" such as crowded dance floors, dark areas, toilets, behind market stalls, and so on, looking for patrons who could be potential first aid cases.  These people may be severely drug affected, unwell or distressed.  And Lovesavers smile...a lot!

Lovesavers are about prevention and onsite management of potential police or medical statistics.  They  provide a secure, non-judgemental, and friendly presence that helps to keep the public feeling secure, well-behaved and safe.  And with all the designer drugs around and the stress of noisy crowded events, it can be very difficult for First Aid and Security to cope with upset or intoxicated people.  Conventional sedatives either don't work or are contra-indicated, and patients can easily become unmanageable.  Lovesavers deal with the difficult cases.

We have worked closely with many First Aid services over the years including St Johns Ambulance and Unimed.  We liase with these services before the event to ensure we have a smoothly operating and integrated service.  Our Lovesaver coordinator, Antonia Ravesi-Pasche, is a senior social worker and administrator with 20 years experience in drug, alcohol and mental health.  She provides our Lovesavers with in-depth training on managing drug-affected and distressed cases, and thorough onsite coordination and supervision.

Lovesavers are carefully briefed on matters of protocol and refer (usually by radio) any worrying issues to the Lovesaver coordinator. Our coordinator, usually Antonia (see above)  then contacts First Aid, who decides what action to take from there. This avoids any confusion between health, safety and security services.

Lovesavers carry 2-way radios, maps of the event as they're often asked for directions, and small first aid kits for little problems that can be easily treated on site.  They also carry spray on sunscreen and sunburn relief, and hand out free bandaids, antiseptic and so on. This can take a tremendous load off busy first aid services, and the public really appreciates the fact that they don't have to wait for help.

Love Savers wear funky uniforms including glowing vests with our Loveworks logo and first aid signs.  The vests have inbuilt flashing lights which are turned on at night, making it easy for the public to find them.  These vests look friendly yet official.  It's also obvious to the public that Lovesavers are not security or police, which is important when we're trying to gain their trust.

Lovesavers are the perfect compliment to our Pink Room, which provides a waiting and recovery space for first aid, as well as an expert and comprehensive drug and alcohol management service.

Once again this is about prevention - by being there before the situation becomes a serious police or medical incident.  We are convinced that Lovesavers, by providing a visable and caring presence, help to create a safer and happier event.
