INTRODUCTION
Loveworks at Big Day Out is about generosity of spirit. It's about
support and guidance for young people as they learn to strut their stuff and
walk their talk. It's a valuable opportunity to inspire with an example of open-hearted
assistance without judgement. It's a platform to introduce holistic
medicine and healing into mainstream first aid. And of
course, it's an opportunity to work at the coal-face of the biggest annual
music event in Australia. We also look at our service as
planting seeds - introducing a wide range of alternatives in health care,
philosophy and spiritual well-being to young people who have often rejected
traditional methods and values.
We look for open-minded volunteers who have that generosity of spirit.
If you're volunteering merely for free entry, Loveworks is not for you.
We do have some fund-raising opportunities at the event, but our setup and
running costs are also very high. We couldn't continue to
provide this valuable service without the amazing support of our volunteers.
All volunteers receive a Certificate of Appreciation documenting their hours
and duties. Letters of recommendation are available on request.
We do have some work positions. Massage
therapists and psychic readers can receive a % of fees collected for their
services, if they're willing to work longer than the standard volunteer
shifts. We may have openings for coordinators of key areas, like
retail, finance, and so on, which require a much greater commitment.
There's more information about this below.
Our services include:
-
The Love Lounge - A huge rest and
relaxation area with live music, massage, readings, lounges, and more.
-
Live and
Learn Information Stand - a comprehensive stand offering
information for young people on drugs, alcohol, safe sex, legal matters,
domestic abuse, shelters adn refuges, and, of course, alternative
medicine, workshops, self-empowerment and improvement methods, retreats,
and more!
-
Lovesavers - Roving teams of nurses and drug and alcohol
workers.
-

which works in conjunction with existing first aid services.

also supplies much valuable information. Be patient and fill it
out to the best of your ability. We want to know about your everyday skills
and experience, not just your event and volunteering experience.

BEFORE AND AFTER HELP: Setup, Pull-down, Decor,

after the event, usually onsite at Olympic Park which provides you with free
entry. Many of you choose to help out even more and it's most appreciated! Or you can help by creating decorations at one of our workshops,
which are on the Central Coast or the Blue Mountains, and help for one day

weekend of the 19th-20th January (Call Anda on 02 43431010)
Training and Info Pack:
We will send you detailed information and a training pack if your application is
accepted. This will include entry, parking, transport and other
details.
CHECK YOUR EMAILS!
It
is a condition of volunteering for Loveworks that you check your
emails regularly, as we generally don't have the resources to
contact volunteers by mail or phone. Make sure you empty your
mail box regularly, and check your mail at least twice a week in the
6 weeks leading up to an event, and every day in the actual week
before the event. We may need to send urgent changes in rosters, gate
entries, pass collection and so on.
Some emails will require
responses from you. We do our best to send them more than once if
we don't get a response, but if this occurs often, or your mail bounces
back regularly, we will have to drop you from our volunteer database.
Check your Spam and Junk folder to make sure our emails are not lost in the spam!
What to bring:
We strongly suggest that you
bring a mobile phone on the day in case you need to phone us (ie entry
problems). Also a bum bag for your valuables. And closed toe shoes
must be worn while working. We provide Loveworks T-hsirts. More on all
this once you're accepted!
Orientation Day:
You'll be required to attend an orientation day on Tuesday 22nd of January
at 7pm. We do allow some exceptions.
Entry: All entry is through
the main gate, across the road from the train station, which is quite close
to our areas. You can drive and park your car at your own expense.
Parking fees are about $15 a day. Please enter before 1pm if at all
possible. It is very difficult to get you through the gate outside of
these times, although we do make an exception for people with work
commitments in the early part of the day.
If you are bringing in heavy
or bulky items, we do everything we can to assist you. On the day
of the event, we can have someone to help you at the entry. Items can
be left securely at our centre for a few days before and after the day of
the event.
Car Entry before and after
the day of the event (The Big Day!) You can drive up to our secure
function rooms and bring in items (massage
tables, stock, etc) in the week before, and they can be picked up from about
an hour after Big Day Out finishes and for the next 2-3 days. You
won't need a pass but we will need to let security at the gate know that you
coming.
Email us if you are driving in before or after the
event, or need help to carry items from the gate.
Clothing:
Loveworks provides a volunteer T-shirt
or singlet with our logo on it. Many of the singlets are loose
fitting, so women might want to wear a bikini top or well-fitting t-shirt or
singlet underneath. The t-shirts come in a wide variety of men's and
women's sizes. We will also provide a secure place to check your bag,
but access to your bag will generally be limited to before and after your
your shift and when you leave Olympic Park. We strongly suggest a bum bag
for your valuables! Shoes must have closed toes to comply with OHS
regulations... and comfortable! You can change into your choice of
clothing before and after your shift.
Food:
We provide free
tea, coffee, herbal tea, and spring water. Assorted sandwiches are
provided twice a day.
Please help up spread the
word! You can
download a mini-poster
to print off and post on notice boards, shop windows,
or just hand to your friends.
You can also save it to your computer and attach it to emails!

Help before and after the event.
We ask everyone to try to
help out for at least one 6 hr shift before or after the event, at Olympic
Park. Some kind souls even enjoy helping for more! Usually a
meal is provided. For those who put in a full week (January 21-27), it's gourmet
catering with the BDO crew!
Tasks include decorating, setting up
couches, tables and chairs, office assistance, phoning, deliveries, etc. Please indicate what days
you would be available. Preference
will be given to volunteers who can help out before and/or after. This
event is a lot of work for us, and we appreciate your help.
Decor Workshops! We also have some
fun decor workshops planned in the Blue Mountains and Sydney. Work 2 days on
the workshop, and 1 day setting up onsite before the festival (or 6 hours
during the festival) for free entry. And we need a
couple people to get on the old computer and place "Volunteers Wanted"
listings for us.

Coordinator's,
2IC's and Supervisor's Positions
Are you interested in a more responsible
position? These require extra dedication and a greater contribution of
your time and energy.
Please
email us your CV and a letter explaining what you'd
like to do and why you think you'd be suitable for the position. We have the
following positions available. Some of these positions come with some
small financial payment, but these are really love jobs! Occasionally
we can provide a free workers pass for a friend or workmate, rather than
money, as our finances are limited.
Director's PA - Support our busy leader
as her personal assistant. Ideally you'd be free to work with Ona from
Jan 20th or 21st - Jan 27th at Olympic Park.
Office Manager - Look
after our busy office and volunteer office crew from Jan 20th - Jan 28th
onsite at Olympic Park. Some work from home before this may be
required. Good office management background, initiative and patience to work
in a busy events office.
Love Lounge Coordinator - Supervising our main room, including our
door monitors and support crew on the day. Management or supervising
skills in drug and alcohol, youth work, etc essential. See
here.
Natural Therapy and
Self-Empowerment Stands Coordinator -
Sourcing, assessing, coordinating and supervising natural therapy and
self-improvement type stands, displays and demonstrations for our Love
Lounge. Experience in natural therapies and coordinating required.
Decor and Setup Coordinator
- Work closely with Antonia, our Big Day Out manager, to develop decor
installations, decor themes and items, source materials, and optionally host
workshops for decor volunteers as well as of course, get it up and
pull it down! You'll be provided with plenty of volunteer assistance.
Volunteer Coordinator -
Coordinate the volunteer training evening, as well as the sign on
and off, t-shirt and resources allocation, meals and other bits and pieces for the
volunteers on the big day. Involves good administration skills and
preferably availability from the 22nd - 27th of January at Olympic Park.
You'll be provided with volunteer assistance as required.
Energetic Healing Coordinator - We offer
free energetic healings. We need someone to coordinate this area.
Tasks would include helping to find some healers, sourcing or putting
together information in poster and pamphlet format on energetic healing,
taking bookings on the day, and generally supervising the area. You would
have an assistant, who could be a friend of yours, so that you both had good
breaks during the day.
Massage and Psychic Reader
Manager - Coordinate our massage and psychic readers, including
rostering, communication, collecting insurance documents and qualifications,
setting up and supervising the area and bookings desk on the day.
Most of the work can be done from home. Good computer and networking
skills are required. Massage qualifications are preferred.
You'll be provided with volunteer assistance as needed. This
position comes with some financial benefits, and preference is given to
someone who has the potential to work with Loveworks at all our events. See
here and here.
Roving Sales Coordinator - This is a
fund-raising area which needs work. We have permission to have 2
outdoor sales tables, and up to 6 roving sellers. They could sell
earplugs and sunscreen, and the tables could also sell our range of sunhats.
We're looking for someone to design some aprons or whatever to carry the
sunscreen and earplugs, and coordinate this on the day, looking after the
6-10 volunteers working for you, including re-stocking their tables or
aprons, and supervising their cash floats which come in bumbags.
These sales would run from 12 noon - 7pm, so you'd have the evening off to
enjoy yourself.
Retail Manager -
Coordinating setup and pack down, pickup and return of stock from suppliers,
stock records, and overseeing our 3 retail areas on the day, including
supervising our main shop yourself. Optionally you may also want to be involved in
choosing and buying stock. You'll need experience in retail
management, average computer skills (incl spreadsheets) and the ability to guide and supervise
staff who will be volunteers with retail experience. This position
comes with some financial benefits, and preference is given to someone who
has the potential to work with Loveworks at all our events. See here
Market Stall Coordinator -
Coordinate and supervise our busy market stall providing essential
and first aid items. You'll need a background in retail management and
the ability to supervise staff who
will mostly be volunteers with retail experience. This position comes with
some financial benefits, and preference is given to someone who has the
potential to work with Loveworks at all our events. See
here.
Finance Manager - Look
after the banking, cash register floats, till reconciliations, income from
retail and natural therapy areas, and payments to therapists readers on the
day. Good background in bookkeeping, cash registers and money-handling
essential. We'll provide you with a couple of trusted volunteers with
good admin and money-handling experience. This position comes with some
financial benefits, and preference is given to someone who has the potential
to work with Loveworks at all our events. This position requires just 1
day's work onsite during the event - but it's a long day! You will
have trusted support so you can have some good breaks.
What
coordinator's position are you interested in? Comments?
Please also
send us an email.
Attach a CV and opening letter.
